Concerns raised over $13m library Questions are being raised over whether $13 million should be spent on the new Hornby library and service centre. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board is divided over plans to build a new library and service centre in Hornby. The new facility would replicate the Hornby Library, which had the Sockburn Service Centre in its building. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board Debbie Mora said the money should be kept within the city council. “It would be better off going into the debt coffers of the council

until such time that the council can afford a new library,” she said. “We have a well utilised and functioning Hornby Library which I am aware many users are happy with,” she said. But deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said it needed to be one of the major focuses for 2015. “It’s something the board will be pushing for,” she said. The Sockburn service centre in the library was only open twice weekly, on a Thursday and Friday. Wigram Residents Association secretary Gina Bolton said there was a huge need for a service centre. •Turn to page 2

Fun time for young learners Annabel’s Educare Avonhead has celebrated the last 12 months of achievements with a party at the centre. Children spent last month doing a variety of Christmas activities which were displayed throughout the centre for children to share with their family and friends. Annabel’s Educare Avonhead curriculum leader Christina Ford-Thompson said it was a great night with good weather. “We had a fabulous turnout of families with well over a 100 parents, siblings, grandparents and other family members coming along to join in the festivities,” she said. The party started with the Annabel’s Educare Children’s

concert. The children had spent the previous weeks practising their favourite Christmas songs. “As always the children performed amazingly, singing along to the songs and not at all phased by all the adults looking at them,” said Mrs Ford-Thompson. They finished the concert with the favourite song of the year Let it Go from the movie Frozen. The children also received a visit from Santa Claus. The group then enjoyed food provided by the children’s families. “This provided a great opportunity for families to get to know each other, look at the displays highlighting the

children’s current learning, put a face to the name of the children and parents that are talked about home and to talk to teachers in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Mrs FordThompson. The night ended with a disco, with music provided DJ Singh. She said the centre was looking forward to the year ahead. “To start the year we are holding a number of special open days for parents and children to visit and see the programme in action and discuss their learning and care needs,” she said. Annabel’s Educare open day’s will held on January 22, January 27 and February 2 from 10am to 2pm.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Foreign students up

International student enrolment numbers at Canterbury University are up 12 percent on this time last year. The university is also looking forward to the completion of the $145 million Canterbury Engineering the Future project. This will create new laboratories and a new social learning space for 1500 students. A $55 million project to redevelop the former commerce building is also underway this year.

BAD MOVE: A Blakely Construction vehicle was caught parked between two 10-minute parking spaces at The Hub Hornby. The picture was posted on Facebook page ‘Shocking Christchurch Drivers.’ The page has become an online watchdog for bad parking around the city. Last week Canterbury Golf general manager Grant Lewis was busted after parking across two disabled parks with his car and boat outside the Bunnings Warehouse in Shirley.

Board plans on keeping busy BY GRACE CABELL In spite of major setbacks in the last 12 months, the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board is looking forward to a busy year. Board chairman Mike Mora said this year would bring new developments to the west, both residential and commercial. “This means homes and jobs. It will also need well-planned and managed infrastructure along with services to build strong supportive communities,” he said. He said the community board

3

would be working closely with residents’ associations and community groups to advocate for them. Mr Mora said last year the community board dealt with many issues around enforcement of resource consents, which he said was frustrating. “It [2014] has been the busiest year of my 22 years as a community board member,” he said. Deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the biggest challenge this year would be dealing with the area’s significant growth. “We’ve had a 12 per cent increase in the area’s population over the last

two years,” she said. She said two areas the community board would focus on would be a swimming pool and a library and service centre for Hornby. Mrs Broughton said she had major concerns about where the Land Use Recovery Plan was heading. “We spent a third of the year last year doing submissions on it, and it seems to be getting further and further away from the resident. It’s very technical,” she said. Board member Debbie Mora said she had major concerns about the people who live in the area around the new Meadowlands

Suggestions for naming of the new Halswell Library and facility centre will close Saturday 18 January. The competition began on Monday December 15. Submissions can still be made online at www.ccc.govt. nz/YouNameIt and paper forms are available at Christchurch City Libraries and city council sports facilities. The best suggestions will be voted on by the public and an ultimate winner announced in March.

Development in Halswell. “They have no reassurance of certainty regarding drainage in the proposed development,” she said. She said she was also disappointed about the board’s unsuccessful application for a bus exchange to be placed on Riccarton Rd and worried about the challenges this Kung Fu success Westburn School pupil Ella Chen, would bring. Summer is in full swing and surf lifeguards are out in force at our beaches. Emily Jones has volunteered at Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club since she was 14. Reporter Bridget Rutherford talked to her about why she does it, who the most troublesome people are, and the funniest rescue she’s had to carry out.

DONATIONS: Kiwanis member David Gower, Soroptimist member Ann Hudson, Kiwanis member Graham Chick and Soroptimist president Lena Metcalf present Korowai Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Bagshaw the cheques.

Youth to benefit from donations for website Korowai Youth Well Being Trust received donations from two Christchurch based global organisations recently to make a website. Soroptimist International of Christchurch and Kiwanis Service Club donated a total of $28,000. Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Bagshaw was presented the cheques which were raised from fundraising

activities over the last two years. Earthquake money was also donated to help the youth of Christchurch. Soroptimist International of Christchurch publicity officer Lesley Fursdon said it was worthwhile giving a donation because the trust knew what it wanted to spend the money on. She said Soroptimist

had heard Kiwanis was also raising funds and they decided to join forces. The website would have an interactive page for youth to ask questions and would feature information on how to keep mentally, physically, spiritually and socially healthy. The trust is dependent on donations to run the free service.

So Emily, tell me a bit about yourself. Well I grew up in Redcliffs so was always close to the beach. I started nippers lessons at Sumner pretty much as soon as I could swim and have been a lifeguard at Taylors Mistake since I was 14. I went to Cashmere High School and I am 21 now. I am a volunteer lifeguard at Taylors Mistake on the weekends and on weekdays I work as a paid regional lifeguard. So we get rostered on and rotate around the different beaches and I get to work with lifeguards from other clubs. So what made you want to become a lifeguard? I guess I’ve always loved being at the beach, growing up near one, and you get to help people. Just coming up through junior surf you see and idolise the senior lifeguards and want to do what they are doing. You learn a lot about the beach and the water and being able to transfer that knowledge onto other people is pretty cool. And what does your role at Taylors Mistake entail? We’re all volunteers so we are rostered on at different times. We have seven patrol teams that rotate with about 10 people in each. So on an average day we will arrive at 10am and someone will go for a paddle in the water to check the conditions. Then we put the flags up where the safest spot to swim is. We talk to some of the swimmers and tell them where it is safe to swim and we have someone on the tower looking out. We do all the preventative

stuff like moving people between the flags and removing glass from the beach and keeping it clean and safe. And then if anything goes wrong we do the rescues. So have you been busy over the holiday break? We work here from November through to March, so there were heaps of people down here over Christmas and New Year and it was really busy. The busy days are good, it makes the time go fast and it is good having lots of people down here. On a colder day it can still be busy because the surf is better when it is raining - more people come than you would think. Have you had to carry out many rescues? Yes, heaps. At Taylors this season there have been two rescues so far. It’s been a relatively safe summer with either no rips or small rips. Sometimes when the beach is full not everyone can swim between the flags and we will have to carry out mass rescues. What was one of the funniest rescues you have done?

AT PACE: Emily Jones (left) and her team at a surf life saving IRB competition.

TEAM EFFORT: Emily Jones (right) and her surf life saving team after competing. A couple of years ago I had to rescue a fully grown man who had got cramp while he was out in the water. Usually surfers are really competent and help us out but I had to go out and tow him back in so he was quite embarrassed. That was quite a funny one. Do you ever worry about sharks when you are in the water? Not really, I know they could be there but hardly ever think about it when I’m in the bay. We do have shark sightings occasionally at Taylors but more often than not they are basking sharks which are harmless and

wouldn’t bother swimmers anyway. What is the most common complaint from beach goers? We’ve had a lot of blue bottles recently, so some people have been getting stung. Otherwise the black sand gets quite hot so there is a lot of towel hopping but most people are pretty happy to be out there. Who are the most difficult people? People who have had a few too many drinks can be a bit difficult to deal with, but that doesn’t happen very often at all. Being a lifeguard, do you ever get hit on

when you are at work? Oh, only a couple of times, I haven’t had any Baywatch pick up lines. The boys get hit on sometimes, everyone loves a life guard. Have you competed in surf life saving competitions? Yep, that’s like the other side of life saving. So I have competed at lots of different competitions. What do you think your best achievement at a competition was? I got a silver medal at the IRB Nationals for the single rescue in an inflatable boat so

that was pretty cool. What would be the best advice you could give to swimmers at the beach this summer? I guess just swim between the flags where it is safe, and if you go to a beach that is not supervised, don’t go by yourself. If you get into trouble in the water stay calm and put your hand straight up in the air. Float on your back if you can and wait for help to come. Other than that just stay sun smart and have a good time. Summer is awesome, it’s like a family down at the surf club.

Don’t cause an ‘idiot’ fire GRASSROOTS SPORT Mixed fortunes in cricket ▌FLAME ▌ FILES

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

First of all, happy new year to everyone in Christchurch. The last week or so has seen summer finally making itself felt with high temperatures and warm nights. Christmas Day itself saw firefighters attending 14 incidents in the city. That’s about average for any other day but we did see one call assisting St John that resulted in the death of the patient. Makes it an awful Christmas for that family. In another case in Mountbatten St, New Brighton, Christmas dinner was ruined when the barbecue preparing it set fire to the garage. Assisting our ambulance colleagues accounted for 14 calls in the past week while false alarms were down and miscellaneous fires, those in bins, rubbish and couches were right up there with 32 attended. This last category includes bad luck, recklessness, stupidity and straight malicious arson as the cause of fire. In nearly all cases they were preventable. Thinking before acting would be a good start for many of those responsible. It would be fantastic if 2015 saw a reduction in these ‘idiot’ fires.

CHARRED: Don’t leave the kitchen when pots are on the stove. I would also be really tickled if our message about staying in the kitchen when stove top cooking was adopted right across town. Both of these things would free up fire trucks, so there is no delay the next time someone is trapped in a burning house or a crashed car or even where it allows our appliance to arrive two minutes before the ambulance to a cardiac arrest. Any of which may just save a life. I think everyone is now aware we are in the middle of what looks like being a very dry summer. Yet, we’re still seeing deliberately lit fires occurring at an undiminished rate. Those involved are creeping out of the nuisance category towards being a real danger. Makes you wonder if they ever think of consequence, or more frightening do they

really want to see property destroyed and people or pets hurt, or worse? We’ve also seen a number of incidents, including one that spread to a house before New Year, that appear to have been caused by fireworks. These are restricted in their sale to the week before Guy Fawkes. But a significant number of people store them away to use at or near New Year’s Eve, when grass, bushes and pine needles are dry. You can be charged with arson for carrying out a reckless act that causes fire. Lighting fireworks that spurt out brightly burning clusters, at night, on the side of a hill, with a northerly breeze further drying the already parched vegetation, may be seen as reckless by some. Do you really want a court to decide in your case? Harewood’s crew met a unique challenge last Tuesday in Avonhead. A man had a swarm of bumble bees which had taken up residence. Apparently beekeepers don’t normally deal with these apiarian jumbo jets so the occupant tried to smoke them out. Hence a call to us. Some communications centre magic tracked down an expert. Hopefully, now all is solved.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

As club cricket enters the second half of the season the city’s western clubs have had contrasting fortunes in the first half of the season. After a disappointing start Riccarton is looking for a much improved effort in 2015. Over the Christmas break the club was languishing in last place in the two-day competition and only one place higher on the one-day ladder. Player coach Ben Rapson said they need to do better in the second half of the campaign and improvements have to be made in all facets of the game but in particular the batting. “I think were struggling with the batting and not scoring enough runs and that always makes things difficult. We have a pretty inexperienced side as well”. Improved performances are what Rapson was after and said the experienced guys in the squad needed to start putting their hands up and taking control. “The more experienced guys, Ben Raine and Cole (McConchie) have to step up and take more responsibility and give a better example for

X-FACTOR: Burnside’s young leg-spinner Blake Coburn who has been a star performer in the first half of the cricket season. the young guys. Confidence breeds and that can flow into the bowling side of things,” Rapson said. They were faced with a tricky but winnable game against Sydenham on Saturday. Riccarton then play the in-form East ChristchurchShirley on January 10. In the two-day competition they play table-toppers Burnside before two winnable games against Old-Boys and Marist-Harewood before finishing the season off against St Albans.

Burnside, meanwhile, have shown much better form and are on track to take home some silverware this season. They are the leaders of the two-day competition, 10 points ahead of nearest rivals Lancaster Park-Woolston. Burnside coach Alex Reese said they had a “very good” start to the season winning all three two-day games outright and put it down to the bowling unit. “I think with the two-dayers it’s our bowlers that give us the X-factor and it’s our great young spinners coming through.” Reese said young leg-spinner Blake Coburn had performed exceptionally well and was in great form. In the penultimate round Burnside face-off against LPW which could be a titledeciding clash. Old-Boys, meanwhile, sat in sixth place in both competitions over the Christmas break. In the two-day format they managed only one win and sit only five points above the bottom placed side. There is still hope in the one-dayers, however, with the Elmwood Park side sitting one point outside the top four with three games to play.

The inner cleanse — with a twist Imagine taking a soiled sponge, submerging it in water and then wringing it out. Submerge it again and repeat. When you rotate your body around the spine in a yoga exercise, you do the same thing to your internal organs. This increases circulation of nutrients, blood and oxygen and helps to flush out impurities. Not only do twists aid in detoxification, but they help to balance out the flow of our energy. As we rotate the body from left to right, we stimulate

both hemispheres of the brain, in turn balancing out the yin and yang flows of energy within our body. Energy flows up, down and in positive and negative directions. The yin, feminine and anticlockwise (or negative) flow of energy magnetises things to us. It is associated with the right brain and left side of the body. The yang, masculine and clockwise (or positive) flow of energy is associated with the left brain and right side of the body and is associated with outwardly seeking the things that we are attracted to.

Medical experts are slamming an Australian author for linking wireless baby monitors to autism and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. “The claims made in this book would be laughable, if they weren’t so irresponsible,” says Telethon Kids Institute head of autism research Professor Andrew Whitehouse. “This is fearmongering at best, and unethical at worst.” Brisbane author Donna Fisher is calling for the removal of wireless baby monitors from Australian shop shelves because she believes they emit dangerous radiation.

In her new book, Light That Heals, she claims electromagnetic fields generated by wireless technology have the potential to cause cancer, reproductive problems, chronic fatigue and more. She is also concerned the exposure can increase the risk of Sids and is a contributing factor in the rise in autism. “Devices such as wireless baby monitors can actually do more harm than good by creating developmental issues in our youngest generation of Australians,” she says. But autism expert Whitehouse says there is no evidence to suggest a link between the use

Rare gene breakthrough Queensland researchers have discovered the genetic mutation behind a Brisbane boy’s medical condition, known to affect only seven people in the world. The team hope that their work can be used as a model for diagnosing and treating rare diseases, which affect more than 1.2 million Australians. Seth de Rooy has TempleBaraitser syndrome, which causes epilepsy, intellectual disability and lack of nails of the big toes and thumbs. The 11-year-old is the only Australian with the syndrome. He was only the second person in the world to be diagnosed with the disease, first identified in an Iranian child, and is now the oldest known patient. As the illness is so rare, Seth’s parents Chris and Steve know little of how their son will develop as he grows or what his medical needs might be in the future. But now researchers have discovered the gene behind the rare condition, which may help them identify existing drugs that could be effective and help minimise some of the symptoms. From analysing blood samples of six people

Their study, published in Nature Genetics, describes how KCNH1 is known to be important for the function of the central nervous system, but hasn’t been associated with human disease before. Seth’s mother Chris said learning more about the genetic cause of the disease had brought her comfort. “It’s hard to think about

it now, but for many years I blamed myself for Seth’s condition — what did I do wrong? I’d ask myself, why is he developing differently to his brother and sister? And when will he learn to walk and talk? “Now we know the genetic cause of this disease, and we’ve seen Seth lead the way for others with his treatment and progress, it’s easier for us to take each day as it comes. “We hope this discovery can inspire more awareness and research into treatments to improve quality of life for Seth and other families like ours living with rare genetic conditions.” — AAP

Providing nursing and homecare services that allow people to maintain as much independence in their own home and community as possible is a large part of Nurse Maude’s work.

N

urse Maude’s homecare is available to anyone recovering in their own home from an accident or surgery, those who have been assessed as needing support and those with a life-limiting illness. Housework and personal care tasks can be difficult under these circumstances, and homecare is key to an increased quality of life while living safely in familiar surroundings. For personal care, an assessment and care plan is completed by a registered nurse so Nurse Maude’s support workers can then provide assistance with dressing and undressing, personal grooming, bathing, toileting, and mobility needs and meals. Personal care services are available seven days a week when needed. Support workers also provide domestic assistance which includes household tasks

such as laundry, vacuuming, dusting, dishes, bed making, meal preparation and essential shopping so clients can leave the hospital earlier or stay in their own home. This service is available from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Nurse Maude’s homecare services are free to those assessed as being eligible for this support, but there is also a private payment option for those not eligible for funding. Referrals to homecare services may be made directly by clients or their families/ whanau, GP, Needs Assessment and Service Coordination Agencies, ACC or public or private hospitals.

Natural supplement

A

n extract of a small pumpkinlike fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Even The Dr. Oz Show on television noted it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for

emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Garcinia camboGia According to Dr. Oz an extract of Garcinia Cambogia, (a small pumpkin-like fruit) called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax, is the most effective & fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Researchers found it: • Helps stop fat being made & stored in the body • Suppresses appetite & cravings. Feel fuller for longer • Increases energy levels & lean muscle mass • Increases Serotonin levels in the brain, especially good for emotional eaters. Serotonin may also improve mood & sleep. • Improves cholesterol & blood lipid levels Swanson Super CitriMax provides a maximum potency researched clinical strength extract for reliable results.

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent Researchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well.

I

n a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo

patients, and not only this, but the patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events but from all causes. According to the lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. It is known that CoQ10 levels decrease in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure as severity worsens. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age and many researchers believe keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. CoQ10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health. Visit Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, or phone 388 5757.

Free Youth Pathways courses help students to succeed

Youth Guarantee is a Government-led initiative designed to help students aged 16 to 19 to study for free.

T

he scheme is for those who are ready to move beyond school but want to continue with study, learning practical skills for future employment. Hundreds of students are successful through the programmes every year, which includes courses in cookery, construction, engineering, health and support, business administration and computing, hospitality, retail, sports training and Maori and Pasifika culture. Many go on to work in apprenticeships or further education. Youth Guarantee student Dylan Dallas feels like he is now achieving something after finding school wasn’t working for him. He now feels motivated after completing his Creative Level 2 programme. “I found it really hard to learn at school and nothing I was learning felt relevant to me,” Dylan says. “The Youth Guarantee course was really interesting. We did lots of creative prints and 3D modelling. It got me used to studying again, but in a better way than school.” Dylan will return in 2015 to study his Certificate in Design Level 4, but in the future he hopes to become an architect or a

draughtsman. “This has put me on the path to a future career. I had no idea of what I wanted to do before, whereas now I’m in the right place and on the right track.” Fellow student Juaan Whatuira-Edwards recommends Youth Guarantee to anyone who “doesn’t fit in academically”. “I didn’t really like school and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I’m pretty grateful I found Youth Guarantee and got myself some skills,” Juaan says. Juaan has completed the introduction to trades course and will return next year to do the pre-trade paint and panel course. “I can’t wait to get back into it and learn more. Preschool children can start their musical journey by joining in our experiential “Take Off with Music”, while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). Those who already play are welcome to join in one of the fabulous groups. If Saturday isn’t an option, CSM also offers a range of weekday opportunities for learning and playing music. Our unique teaching programme includes lessons, both group and individual, and ensemble playing in an orchestra or band! If affordability is an issue, CSM Canterbury Community Trust. Visit can provide discounts of up to 50 per www.csm.org.nz, or phone the office on 366 cent through funding provided by the 1711 to find out what we can offer you.

Fostering a lifelong love of music Ali Philips

A

li Phillips has always known what her dream job would be. Through Aoraki Polytechnic, she has been able to take the first steps along the path to making this a reality. Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus, Ali has completed her second year of hairdressing, a Certificate in Professional Hairdressing, Level 3. “I have always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll's hair and generally fascinated with hairdressing.” With no experience in the industry and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect fit at Aoraki. “I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali. The Level 3 full-time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques. “These last two years have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.”

Whether you're 2 or 92, the Christchurch School of Music can offer a musical experience to suit your needs. Tuition is offered for a range of instruments (including voice) along with theory, aural perception, and preschool classes. CSM also offers a wide variety of ensembles ranging from small Chamber Music groups and Rock Bands through to large orchestras, concert bands and choirs. At CSM, the whole family can learn and play together on a Saturday morning. If Saturday isn't an option for you, we also offer lessons (along with a selection of performance groups) during the week.

Community Trust Funding allows CSM to offer up to 50% discounts for lower income families.

Introducing

Rud Stewart Europe's Premier Rod Stewart Tribute Artist

20

Monday January 12 2015

23

Billed as one of the best Rod Stewart tribute acts, Rud Stewart performs two Christchurch shows - at the Cashmere Club this Friday night (16th January), and at the Hornby Working Mens Club this Saturday night (17th January). Hailing from Yorkshire England, Rud has been performing his tribute shows to Rod Stewart for the past 15 years. Often mistaken for Rod Stewart and a life long fan himself, he covers all of Rod's hits from the 60's through to the current day and latest album. His shows have been seen in many corners of the world and he performs regularly in the UK, Sweden, Las Vegas USA and Majorca Spain. Rud is that good he was invited to perform at the Rod Stewarts 60th birthday party. When asked what his career highlights have been so far, Rud lists meeting Rod and performing at his 60th birthday party, singing at the Olympia football stadium, performing at the Helsingborg Festival in Sweden, and having his own song ‘Same Game’ played on BBC Radio 2. Tickets to next weekend’s shows are $20 on sale now at the respective club offices. Don’t miss this opportunity to see Europe’s premier Rob Stewart tribute artist backed by a full band. Members, guests & affiliates welcome.
